Students of Terchire Senior High School have been encouraged to develop a strong understanding of the 1992 Constitution and actively participate in civic life following the inauguration of the school's Civic Education Club by the Tano North Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE).
The inauguration ceremony, held on May 29, 2026, marked a significant step in promoting civic consciousness and responsible citizenship among young people. The event brought together officials from the NCCE, the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), school authorities, and students.
Leading the inauguration was the Tano North Municipal Director of the NCCE, Mr. Joseph Oduro-Buabeng, who was accompanied by his staff and the Tano North Municipal Director of CHRAJ, Mr. Victor Osei. The officials jointly inducted the executives of the newly established Civic Education Club and charged them to serve as ambassadors of civic responsibility within the school and their communities.
Addressing the students, Mr. Oduro-Buabeng explained that the formation of Civic Education Clubs in schools forms part of the NCCE's efforts to nurture informed, responsible, and patriotic citizens from a young age. According to him, the initiative seeks to equip students with knowledge about the country's democratic system, constitutional governance, and the rights and responsibilities of citizenship.
He noted that the establishment of the club aligns with the Commission's mandate to educate citizens on the principles and objectives of the 1992 Constitution and to encourage active participation in national development. He emphasized that young people play a crucial role in shaping the future of the country and must therefore be empowered with the knowledge and values necessary to become effective leaders and responsible citizens.
Mr. Oduro-Buabeng stated that the objective of forming the Civic Education Club is to "catch them young" by instilling in students a culture of patriotism, discipline, leadership, and civic responsibility. He stressed that exposing students to constitutional and civic education at an early stage would help build a generation that appreciates democratic values, respects the rule of law, and contributes meaningfully to national development.
The Municipal Director further assured members of the club that the NCCE would engage them regularly through educational programs, discussions, quizzes, debates, and other civic learning activities. These engagements, he explained, would deepen their understanding of the provisions of the 1992 Constitution and prepare them for future leadership roles and responsibilities.
He encouraged the students to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the club to broaden their knowledge, develop critical thinking skills, and become active participants in addressing issues affecting their communities and the nation at large.
Also addressing the gathering, the Municipal Director of CHRAJ, Mr. Victor Osei, commended the initiative and urged the students to uphold the principles of integrity, fairness, and respect for human rights. He encouraged them to serve as positive role models and advocates for justice and accountability among their peers.
The newly inaugurated executives pledged their commitment to promoting the objectives of the Civic Education Club and fostering civic awareness among fellow students. They expressed appreciation to the NCCE and CHRAJ for the opportunity and promised to work diligently to ensure the success of the club.
The inauguration of the Terchire Senior High School Civic Education Club forms part of ongoing efforts by the NCCE to strengthen civic education in educational institutions and empower young people with the knowledge, values, and skills needed to become responsible citizens and future leaders of Ghana.
