The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) hosted a delegation from the Somaliland Centre for Civic Education (SCCE) at its head office in Accra. The visit marked the official signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions, aimed at fostering institutional cooperation and promoting knowledge-sharing programmes in civic education and public sensitisation.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Ms. Kathleen Addy, Chairperson of the NCCE, expressed her excitement about the Commission’s growing influence across the continent and its impact on civic education institutions. She noted that the partnership underscores the NCCE’s commitment to supporting the establishment of Civic Education Centres beyond Ghana’s borders. “This proves that greater African collaboration is possible outside of financial aid or external contributions,” she said.
Although many African countries have paid working visits to the Commission to study its modus operandi and learn its civic education practices, Somaliland becomes the first African country to formally sign an MoU with the NCCE to form a strategic partnership, a milestone the Commission considers historic. The NCCE encourages such collaborations driven by a desire to strengthen civic education systems and ensure the independence of civic education organisations to effectively educate citizens on their civic duties and rights. The Chairperson further stated that the NCCE remains open to engaging with other countries that seek to draw lessons from Ghana’s civic education model and expressed optimism about deepening intra-African cooperation in strengthening democratic governance.
