South Tongu NCCE Launches Citizenship Week with School Outreach on Responsible Digital Citizenship

The South Tongu District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has commenced activities marking the 2026 Citizenship Week Celebration with educational engagements in selected basic schools across the district.

The outreach programme formed part of NCCE’s annual nationwide Citizenship Week campaign, which seeks to nurture civic consciousness and constitutional awareness among young people. This year’s celebration is under the theme "Upholding Our Constitution in the Digital Age."

As part of the exercise, NCCE officers visited Sogakope Basic ‘A’, Sogakope Basic ‘C’, and Fieve D/A JHS, where they engaged upper primary and Junior High School students on their civic responsibilities as citizens of Ghana.

The sessions focused on Article 41 of the 1992 Constitution, which outlines the Duties of the Citizen. Students were educated on the importance of respecting the rights of others, protecting public property, safeguarding the environment, defending the nation, and upholding the Constitution.

A key aspect of the engagement centred on responsible digital citizenship. Using practical examples from popular social media platforms such as WhatsApp, TikTok, and Facebook, officers explained how constitutional duties extend to online conduct. Students were cautioned against engaging in cyberbullying, spreading misinformation, promoting hate speech, and sharing harmful content online.

The officers stressed that while the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, citizens must exercise that right responsibly. Students were encouraged to use digital platforms positively to promote truth, respect, peace, and national unity.

The programme also featured the recitation of the National Pledge and National Anthem, reinforcing patriotism and national identity among the students. Interactive question-and-answer sessions provided participants with the opportunity to deepen their understanding of citizenship and constitutional values.

Addressing the students, NCCE officers reminded them that they are future leaders whose actions today will shape the future of their communities and the nation. They urged the students to respect the law, protect public resources, and use technology responsibly in line with constitutional principles.

Teachers and school authorities expressed appreciation to the Commission for the engagement and called for more regular civic education programmes to strengthen constitutional awareness among young people.

The outreach forms part of NCCE’s broader efforts to equip the younger generation with the knowledge, values, and attitudes required to become responsible citizens in an increasingly digital world.
