Garu NCCE Marks Democracy Day with Call for Responsible Digital Citizenship

The Garu District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) made the call during a radio sensitisation programme on the International Day of Democracy, held at Garu Quality FM. The engagement was held under the theme “Upholding Our Constitution in a Digital Age: Our Collective Responsibility.”

Speaking on the programme, Mr. Akolgo Samuel Atando, Assistant Director (AD), educated the public on their civic responsibilities and the importance of understanding and appreciating their rights and obligations as citizens.

He explained that democracy is a system of government in which citizens have the opportunity to participate in choosing their leaders and influencing the direction of their country. He further noted that all political parties have the freedom to participate in shaping the political will of the people of Ghana.

Mr. Akolgo also drew attention to the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which establishes Ghana as a democratic state committed to the realization of freedom and justice, with sovereignty residing in the people.

Building on the digital dimension of the discussion, Mr. Ali Nashiru, Chief Field Officer (CFO), emphasized the important role young people have to play in Ghana’s democratic development. He encouraged them to use social media and other digital platforms responsibly to engage in discussions on national issues and contribute meaningfully to public discourse.

He, however, cautioned that digital participation must be accompanied by responsibility. Citizens, he noted, have a duty to participate in democratic processes, respect the law, protect peace, promote tolerance and contribute to safeguarding Ghana’s democracy.

Concluding the engagement, Mr. Akolgo urged citizens to translate their knowledge of democratic rights into responsible action by fulfilling their duties and obligations to their communities and fellow citizens.

The radio engagement reaffirmed the NCCE’s commitment to using public education and civic dialogue to promote informed, responsible, and digitally conscious citizens capable of contributing to the protection and strengthening of Ghana’s democracy.
