In a demonstration of civic responsibility and commitment to environmental cleanliness, the Asutifi South District Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) joined the Asutifi South District Assembly and other stakeholders in the National Sanitation Day clean-up exercise held in Hwidiem, the district capital, on Saturday, 6th June 2026.
The exercise, dubbed “Cadet Call,” was specially organized to encourage the participation of Senior High School cadets from Acherensua Senior High School and Hwidiem Senior High School in community sanitation activities. The initiative sought to instill discipline, volunteerism and environmental responsibility among the youth while promoting cleaner and healthier communities.
The clean-up exercise formed part of the nationwide sanitation campaign aimed at improving environmental hygiene and encouraging active citizen participation in maintaining clean surroundings. By involving school cadets, security agencies and other stakeholders, the organizers sought to strengthen community ownership of sanitation efforts and inspire young people to become champions of environmental protection.
The exercise covered several key locations within the district capital, including St. Elizabeth Hospital, the Hwidiem Lorry Park and the principal streets of Hwidiem. Participants swept public spaces, cleared refuse and removed waste materials to improve sanitation conditions and enhance the appearance of the town.
The programme brought together the District Chief Executive, personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service, the National Ambulance Service, Zoomlion Ghana Limited, staff of the NCCE, officials of the District Assembly and students from the participating schools.
Addressing participants during the exercise, the organizers emphasized the importance of environmental cleanliness and the need for citizens to contribute actively towards creating safe and healthy communities. They noted that poor sanitation remains a major challenge in many communities and called on residents to adopt responsible waste management practices to prevent environmental pollution and sanitation-related diseases.
The involvement of the Senior High School cadets was particularly significant, as it provided an opportunity to nurture leadership, discipline, teamwork and volunteerism among young people. The cadets were encouraged to continue promoting cleanliness within their schools and communities and to serve as role models for their peers.
Participants demonstrated dedication and enthusiasm throughout the activity, and their collective efforts contributed to improved sanitation conditions in key public spaces within the district capital.
The successful exercise reaffirmed the commitment of stakeholders to environmental protection and highlighted the importance of collaborative action in promoting public health and sustainable community development.
