NCCE Nandom Calls for Regular Desilting of Drains and Proper Plastic Waste Management

The Nandom Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has called on residents to regularly desilt drains and adopt responsible plastic waste management practices to promote a clean, healthy and sustainable environment.

Speaking during a radio sensitisation programme on Nandom FM, the Directorate highlighted the dangers associated with poor sanitation, particularly choked drains and the indiscriminate disposal of plastic waste.

Listeners were informed that blocked drains could contribute to flooding, especially during heavy rainfall, while stagnant water from choked gutters creates breeding grounds for mosquitoes and increases the risk of diseases such as malaria, cholera and typhoid.

To help address these challenges, households were encouraged to regularly clean and maintain drains in front of their homes and refrain from dumping refuse into gutters. Such practices, the NCCE explained, obstruct the free flow of water and worsen flooding within communities.

Attention was also drawn to responsible plastic waste management through the adoption of the 3Rs: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. Residents were encouraged to reduce their dependence on single-use plastics, reuse plastic containers where possible and dispose of plastic waste in appropriate bins for proper collection.

Burning plastic waste or dumping it in open spaces and drains was strongly discouraged because of the potential harm to public health and the environment.

Reinforcing the civic responsibility of citizens, the Directorate reminded listeners that Article 41(k) of the 1992 Constitution requires every citizen to protect and safeguard the environment.

Residents were therefore urged to regard environmental cleanliness as a shared responsibility that requires the active participation of individuals, households and communities.

Concluding the engagement, the NCCE encouraged residents to make regular drain maintenance and responsible waste disposal part of their everyday practices, noting that these actions would help reduce flooding, protect public health and contribute to a cleaner and healthier Nandom Municipality.
