University for Development Studies (UDS) has qualified for the super zonal stage of NCCE’s University Civic Challenge. UDS competed with Bolga Polytechnic, Wa Polytechnic, and Tamale University at an event held in Tamale. This year’s contest is on the theme “Ghana, One People: Our Values, Our Sovereignty in Participatory Democracy”. Contestants are expected to answer questions on the1992 Constitution and other governance-related matters. The 2019 edition of the University Civic Challenge has twenty selected universities across the country participating in the competition. UDS as winners will represent the Northern Zone at the Super Zonal Level.
In a remark, Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations at NCCE, Samuel Asare Akuamoah, said citizens should realise that sovereignty resides in them and that persons in authority draw their powers from the people of Ghana. This citizen-based power mandates citizens to hold duty bearers accountable. He admonished the youth to support the NCCE in its campaign against activities of political party militias.
The Director of Programmes at NCCE, Johnson Opoku urged all participating schools and supporters to bear in mind that Mother Ghana must come first in all their dealings and all persons are enjoined to work collectively towards achieving that goal.
Mr. Edward Ohene from the Ghana National Petroleum Company for his part explained that the GNPC’s support for education forms part of its corporate social responsibility and the GNPC is delighted to support this year’s NCCE University Civic Challenge and if possible subsequent editions.
The focus of the University Civic Challenge is to motivate students at the tertiary level to study the 1992 Constitution through a play-and-learn format to enhance students’ civic and constitutional knowledge. Contestants are expected to become ambassadors of Rule of Law at the end of each contest.
