The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has intensified efforts to hold debates in all 276 constituencies for parliamentary candidates to communicate their vision and policies and engage with constituents on issues of national concern.
Ms. Ophelia Nana Yaa Ankrah, NCCE Eastern Regional Director, stated during an engagement at Okere that the NCCE Parliamentary Candidates Debate Platforms also seek to provide an avenue for parliamentary candidates to share their political party’s vision for the constituency.
Ms. Ankrah explained that the NCCE, as part of its mandate, also seeks to deepen and strengthen the democratic pillars of the country by creating a solid platform for parliamentary candidates to engage the electorates on local and national issues.
“We also use it to solicit commitments from the parliamentary candidates to non-violence and issue-based campaigns and to ensure tolerance and peace before, during, and after elections and serve as a common platform to engage their constituents,” Ms. Ankrah stated.
The Eastern Regional version of the PCDs commenced in Okere District on October 31, 2024, at the Mile 14 Apostolic Church, Asenema.
The candidates who participated were Prince Henry Owiredu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC); Joseph Kwadwo Afari-Yeboah of the Convention People’s Party (CPP); and Daniel Kenneth Nana Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who pulled out of the debate at the later minute.
Both the NDC and CPP parliamentary candidates used the platform to explain the policies and proposals of their respective parties and appealed to the electorates to vote for them and their respective presidential candidates.
The NDC candidate outlined the party’s Election 2024 Manifesto and called on the Okere Constituency electorates to vote massively for former President John Dramani Mahama as President and vote for him to represent them in the next Parliament.
The CPP Candidate also used the platform to outline his vision and urged the electorates to vote for the CPP Presidential candidate Nana Akosua Frimpomaa and himself as the Okere Parliamentary Candidate to represent them in the next parliament.
The electorates expressed interest and called on the NCCE to organize more of the debate.
The Inter-Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) Chairman Nana Asamoah Doudou I, who is also the Awukugua Tufohene, chaired the occasion, which was moderated by the Reverend Willington Vigbedor and Rev.
Theophilus Buadee of the Church of Pentecost Church, Asenema.
Also in attendance were NCCE Eastern Officials, including the Deputy Eastern Regional Director, Mr.
Augustine Bosrotsi, and the Okere District Director, Mr. Godfried Alexander Bonney.
The NCCE, established by the Constitution of Ghana and given further effect by Act 452, has as one of its main functions to formulate, implement, and oversee programmes intended to inculcate in the citizens of Ghana awareness of their civic responsibilities and an appreciation of their rights and obligations as free people.
