The National Commission for Civic Education, in collaboration with the African Centre for Economic Transformation (ACET), has held a citizens’ engagement at the Miklin Hotel in Kumasi, Ashanti Region, from 18th – 20th April 2024. This event aimed to foster a social contract between Ghana’s leaders and its citizens to facilitate the country's Political and Economic Transformation. Dubbed "Compact for Ghana’s Political and Economic Transformation," the social contract targets the root causes of Ghana’s economic challenges.
The first day of the engagement, emphasized Private Sector Development. Participants hailed from various private business sectors, including traders, entrepreneurs, businessmen, retired civil servants, medium enterprises, youth groups, market women, and gender activists from Ejisu, Fayiese, Adum, Konongo, Adeimbra, among others.
On the second day, topics concerning Fiscal, National Planning, and Gender was treated. Attendees were primarily chosen from traditional and opinion leaders, religious bodies, public and civil servants, academia, media, senior citizens, and traders in the Region.
On the final day, the programme focused on raising awareness at the grassroots level to initiate discussions about the issues and challenges confronting the youth in Ghana. The goal was to grasp how these challenges impact the youth and gather their suggestions as contributions to the Compact for the Social Contract between Ghana’s leaders and the citizens. The activity, which centred on youth, skills, and development, drew young people from across the region. Most attendees were youth. They were presented with various challenges they face, including poverty, inadequate education, poor health practices, and social problems.
