Ga South NCCE deepens HIV/AIDS Awareness among Residents

The Ga South Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has implemented a series of educational programmes aimed at drumming home the message on HIV/AIDS prevention among schools and socio-economic groups within the municipality.

Resource persons described HIV/AIDS as a national health threat with no recognized cure within the jurisdiction, adding that the virus is “no respecter of persons” and can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or background. Modes of transmission highlighted included the use of infected sharp objects such as needles, blades, and razors, as well as unprotected sexual intercourse.

The sessions also addressed a growing trend of reliance on post-contraceptive pills among young people, to prevent pregnancy while neglecting condom use during casual sex. The audiences were cautioned that while emergency contraceptives may prevent pregnancy, they do not protect against HIV transmission.

They were further encouraged to undertake voluntary HIV testing at reputable health facilities to know their status early and seek medical advice. Resource persons intimated that early detection is crucial because the virus may remain asymptomatic for three to five years, depending on an individual’s immune system.

There was also the advocacy against the stigmatization and discrimination against persons living with HIV/AIDS. Each session called for the show of compassion, noting that many victims may have contracted the virus through circumstances beyond their control. Stigmatization, thus, only deepens isolation and hinders effective management of the disease.

Beneficiary schools included Ngleshie Amanfro Technical Institute, Galilea M/A 1 & 2 Basic Schools, Domeabra Methodist A & B Basic Schools, Danchira M/A Basic School, Ashalaja 1 & 2 Basic Schools, Obaakrowa M/A Basic School, as well as members of socio-economic groups such as the Galilea fishing landing site, Galilea Market, and drivers at Galilea and Ngleshie Amanfro taxi ranks.
