Yendi Municipal NCCE Engages NEDCo VRA Over Power Challenges in the Municipality

In a bid to address growing public concerns about erratic power supply in Yendi, the Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) paid a courtesy visit to the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), a subsidiary of the Volta River Authority (VRA).

Led by Municipal Director Mr. Osman Kassim, the NCCE delegation met with Mr. Tulley Y. Samson, Manager of NEDCo VRA in Yendi, as part of the Commission’s institutional stakeholder engagement activities. The meeting aimed to foster collaboration and explore solutions to persistent electricity challenges affecting residents and businesses.

Mr. Kassim conveyed widespread dissatisfaction among residents over frequent power outages, which many say are disrupting essential services and eroding trust in the utility provider. He emphasised the need for improved service delivery to restore public confidence and encourage the timely payment of bills.

Responding to the concerns, Mr. Samson acknowledged the outages and revealed that NEDCo is actively investigating the root causes. He announced plans to construct a new substation to replace the ageing infrastructure installed in 1989, expressing optimism that the upgrade would significantly stabilise power supply in the municipality.

Mr. Samson also highlighted two pressing issues undermining operations: rampant power theft and low revenue collection. “Daily collections in Yendi sometimes fall below GH¢2,000,” he disclosed, noting that such figures are unsustainable for maintaining and expanding services.

To address these challenges, Mr. Samson appealed to the NCCE for support in public education efforts. He proposed joint community outreach and radio engagements to sensitise residents on responsible electricity use and the importance of bill payments.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to collaboration, as Mr. Samson expressed appreciation to the NCCE for its proactive engagement and pledged to work closely with the Commission to enhance service delivery and community trust.
