Students urged to desist from exam malpractices ahead of this year’s BECE

The Ashaiman Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), had an interaction with three hundred and seventy-six (376) Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) candidates of Ashaiman 2,3 and 6 cluster of schools on how to conduct themselves during this year’s examination, and to promote Ghanaian values like integrity, honesty, hard work and respect for authority.

According to the Municipal Director of Ashaiman office of the Commission, Ms. Salvata M. Koku, the purpose of the interaction was to explain to the pupils the DOs and DON’Ts of examination as they prepare to write their final examinations in July 2024.

Speaking to the candidates, the Director admonished them to desist from any kind of malpractice during the examinations. They were cautioned against taking foreign materials into the examination hall, the use of mobile telephones as well as programable calculators.

They were advised to eschew the habit of inscribing answers on their bodies and clothing. Ms. Koku reiterated that the passing of notes for help from other candidates, receiving or giving assistance during examination are offences punishable by the West African Examination Council (WAEC). “Any act which gives a candidate an unfair advantage over the other is not going to be entertained by the Council”, she stressed.

The pupils were advised to go into the examination prepared rather than depending on any form of “Apo”. She added that candidates should accord the due respect to supervisors, invigilators, inspectors and school officials in the performance of their duties.

The candidates were further advised to acquire the prescribed writing and construction materials for the exams. They were reminded that the rules of engagement by WAEC had punitive measures that go with specific offences. These include cancellation of specific subject papers, cancellation of entire results, prosecution as well as being barred for a year or two after candidates have been found culpable after investigations by the appropriate committee of the Council.

In concluding students were advised to read instructions carefully before attempting to answer the questions. They were wished the best of luck in their impending exams by the Municipal Director of the Commission.
