A team from the SOS Children’s Village office in Ghana has called on the management of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to seek the latter’s collaboration and support on what is known as the “NORAD Project”.
The NORAD Project is an initiative by SOS Children's Villages in Ghana that is funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD). This project focuses on strengthening childcare and protection systems in Ghana, particularly to prevent the separation of children from their families.
The Country Manager, who was also the leader of the SOS Children’s Village delegation, Mr. Alexander Mar Kekula, indicated that their outfit, since its inception, has been noted for erecting building infrastructure to accommodate destitute children who lacked parental care. He, however, stated that they have, for the past fifteen years, put a hold on the establishment of more villages to accommodate the growing number of children they interface with who, in one way or another, are without parental care.
According to Mr. Kekula, this move is supported by research, which suggests that children do much better within their families and communities, which are more familiar terrains to them, referencing the adage, “it takes a village or a community to look out for a child”.
Meanwhile, the Deputy Chair in charge of Operations at NCCE, Mr. Samuel Akuamoah, welcomed the partnership and assured the SOS team of the Commission’s full support. He underscored that this project aligns with NCCE’s line of operation, citing the Citizenship Week Celebration, Project Citizen, and other flagship programmes, which can be leveraged as vehicles of advocacy in support of the course towards safeguarding the young citizens of the country.
