PHOTOS: NCCE embarks on-street campaign to fight Covid-19

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has intensified its street campaign against coronavirus pandemic in Accra.

The Commission as part of its core responsibility is reaching out to all citizens across the country no matter their status.

Taking advantage of the heavy traffic at the Airport stretch, staff of NCCE were captured with placards educating passers-by and commuters on the need to observe all Covid-19 precautionary measures.

Addressing the media, the Deputy Chairman of National Commission for Civic Education, Ms. Catherine Addy said the street campaign is necessary since many are unable to watch and listen to Covid-19 messages on radio and television because of their busy schedules.

According to her, embarking on Covid-19 sensitization exercise in public places help to combat the coronavirus pandemic.

She commended government for the swift response to the Commission’s call for logistics support to combat the novel coronavirus.

“NCCE has the mandate to undertake public education for a wide range of issues in our country. When Covid-19 came, we extended a cry of help to government and government came to our aid with support in terms of money and vehicles and that is what has helped us to be able to deploy a huge campaign across the country bringing the message to Ghanaians that Covid-19 is real, still with us and we still need to take the precautions to stay safe.”

She indicated, “this street campaign is targetting urban population such as the people driving along the road. We’re taking this step because we realised that people in this category are very busy with work. For instance, they wake up early, go to work and come home late and it isn’t always that they get time to watch TV.

“Essentially, they hardly interact with the messages we put out there so we decided to come and stand at the roads because everybody will stop at the traffic light and see the messages. We know that people know these messages already but this campaign serves as a reminder. Sometimes after a while, people get complacent thinking the disease is out of the system but we all know that it is not.

“The community spread is wide, so we can’t afford to be complacent and have a non-feller attitude towards keeping safe.

“Simple thing like wearing a mask isn’t so difficult. We all suffer wearing a mask but you have to compare that to losing your life. Everybody is at equal risk so it is important that people are reminded.

“Wear a mask, wash your hands, sanitize your hands and social distance. These precautionary measures will help us all survive this pandemic.

“The campaign will keep running until the disease is over. We interact with a different crop of people across the country.” Catherine Addy, Deputy Chairman, National Commission for Civic Education noted

NCCE has strategized its COVID- 19 campaign by sending civic educators with information vans to various part of the country to spread the message.

The Commission been combing through parts of the country interacting with the populace and getting the COVID- 19 message to them.
