NCCE, NYA and Narcotics Control Office Educate Kaleo SHTS Students on Responsible Citizenship and Drug Abuse

The Nadowli-Kaleo District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in collaboration with the district office of the National Youth Authority (NYA) and the District Narcotics Control Office, has engaged final-year students at the Kaleo Senior High Technical School on the importance of responsible citizenship and the need to avoid drug abuse.

The program formed part of efforts to promote discipline, patriotism, and healthy lifestyles among young people, especially those transitioning into adulthood after their secondary-level education. The program was held at the Kaleo Senior High Technical School premises. District officers from the National Commission for Civic Education, Narcotic Control Office, and the National Youth Authority took turns and engaged the students on various topics.

Addressing the students, Emmanuel Der Tambile, District Director of the NCCE, highlighted the responsibilities of citizens in national development, stressing the need for young people to respect the laws of the country, uphold integrity, and contribute positively to their communities. He encouraged the students to be law-abiding, tolerant, and committed to protecting public property and promoting peace wherever they found themselves. He further reminded the students that responsible citizenship goes beyond academic excellence and requires discipline, respect for authority, active participation in community life, and a strong sense of national responsibility.

Representatives from the District Narcotics Control Office, led by Ceasar Tenzagh, also educated the students on the dangers associated with drug and substance abuse. They cautioned that the use of illicit drugs and other harmful substances could negatively affect students’ health, academic performance, behavior, and future aspirations. The students were advised to resist peer pressure and avoid experimenting with substances that could destroy their lives and ambitions. Mr. Stephen Kobum, the Regional Media Relations Officer at the Upper West Regional Office of the Narcotic Control Office, elaborated on how drug abuse often leads to school dropouts, criminal activities, mental health challenges, and other social problems that undermine national development.

The District NYA Officer, Mr. Titus Dumbu, encouraged the students to focus on their education, develop positive attitudes, and take advantage of opportunities that would enable them to become productive and responsible citizens.

The interactive session allowed students to ask questions and share their concerns on issues relating to youth behavior, peer influence, and substance abuse. The program ended with a call on students to become ambassadors against drug abuse in their schools and communities.
