The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has intensified public education on the menace of substance abuse in the municipality and beyond, with staff of the Commission engaging the public through a radio and television program on Future FM/TV.
The two-hour program featured the Municipal Director, Mr. Daniel A. Boateng, and Mr. Joel A. Mensah (ACEO), who educated the public on the meaning of drug abuse, its causes, effects and possible remedies for persons struggling with addiction.
The host, Ohene Kwame David, moderated the discussion with a series of questions that facilitated an in-depth conversation on substance abuse and its impact on individuals, families and society.
Members of the public also participated by calling in with questions, including concerns about the use of painkillers without a medical prescription after a hard day's work and the consumption of energy drinks by drivers to stay awake during long-distance journeys. The NCCE officials provided guidance and cautioned the public on the potential risks associated with the misuse of such substances.
Impressed by the importance of the education, the host pledged to continue collaborating with the NCCE to provide public education on substance abuse and related issues.
Mr. Daniel A. Boateng also indicated that the Commission would engage stakeholders from the Mental Health Unit of the Wassa Akropong Government Hospital to join future educational programs aimed at addressing substance abuse and promoting mental health awareness in the municipality and beyond.
