The Sampa District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) in the Bono Region has visited Sampa Nursing Training College and called on the students to be role models in their communities in preventing, containing, and fighting violent extremism and terrorism. The visit by the Commission forms part of a series of activities under the European Union-funded Preventing and Containing Violent Extremism (PCVE) project. This also sought to inculcate a sense of unity and patriotism to prevent violence and radicalization among the students.
Addressing the students, the Bono Regional Director of the NCCE, Ms. Cynthia Anima Boadu, urged them to be vigilant in their respective communities to help identify and report unusual occurrences in their communities to the appropriate institutions. She expressed worries about violent extremism in the neighboring Sahel regions and stressed that could that this result in a spillover and should be of great concern to all Ghanaians including students. “As future leaders of the country, it is therefore crucial for all citizens to be united with a common goal to fight the menace,” she said.
The District Chief Executive of the Jaman North District, Hon. Solomon Owusu cautioned the students against radicalisation and recruitment into extremist groups. He encouraged them to cooperate with the security agencies to prevent and contain violent extremism in the country.
Kyeamehene of the Sampa Traditional Council, Nana Takyi Poku, expressed his gratitude to the Commission for organizing such an important programme in his traditional area. He implored them to remain united in the fight against violent extremism and terrorism in Ghana.
Other resource persons were the Deputy Bono Regional Director of NCCE, Mr. Peter Kwabena Gyasi Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Stanley Baku.
