The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in partnership with Fidelity Bank Ghana, has successfully held a Civic Fest Celebration and Competition in the Ho Municipality to champion a youth-led climate action under the theme, “Protecting Our Environment: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.”
The event brought together three Junior High School Civic Education Clubs – Philip-Akpo Memorial JHS, Dome A.M.E. Zion Basic School, and Mawuli JHS – for a vibrant showcase of civic knowledge, environmental awareness, and national consciousness. After a spirited contest featuring drama, poetry, dance, rap, comedy, and exhibitions of upcycled plastic products, Ho-Dome A.M.E. Zion Basic School emerged as the overall winner, impressing judges with their creativity and deep grasp of the ‘3R concept’.
In his opening remarks, Director of the Volta Regional Office of the NCCE, Mr. Kenneth Kponor, commended Fidelity Bank Ghana for its support and urged the students to embrace the principles of reduce, reuse, and recycle as a national imperative to combat plastic pollution and its accompanying health risks.
Chairman of the occasion, Torgbui Kludzehe of Ho, expressed admiration for the students’ ingenuity in transforming waste into reusable items, describing their performances as inspiring and impactful.
Meanwhile, the Ho Municipal Director of NCCE, Rev. Vincent Adzika, lauded the enthusiasm of participating schools and emphasized the importance of instilling civic values and environmental stewardship in the youth. “The future of Ghana’s sustainable development rests on the active involvement of young people in protecting our environment,” he stated, further noting that the Civic Fest is not merely an academic exercise but a platform to cultivate honesty, patriotism, and communal spirit among schoolchildren.
The event was attended by notable dignitaries in the Municipality, including the Deputy Volta Regional Director of NCCE, Mr. Oral-Robert Amenyo, Mr. Elliot Setornam Kwami Akorlor of THE Fidelity Bank Ghana;,, the Regional Director for the Department of Children, Rev. Israel Akrobortu, as well as some officers from CHRAJ and the Ghana Education Service Offices in the Municipality.
Awards were presented to the winning school and the other participants, with a call for students to become ambassadors of environmental protection in their various schools and communities.
The Civic Fest marks a significant step in integrating civic education with climate action, empowering the next generation to lead Ghana toward a cleaner, more responsible future.
