NCCE Inaugurates Civic Education Club at UCC

The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has inaugurated a Civic Education Club at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) to promote civic responsibility, democratic values, responsible leadership, and active citizenship among students.

The inauguration ceremony was held at UCC on April 29, 2026, and brought together students, university authorities, and officials of the NCCE. The event formed part of the Commission’s efforts to deepen civic education among young people and prepare them to contribute meaningfully to Ghana’s democratic development.

As part of the inauguration, pioneer executives were elected to lead the club. They are Sandra Awolousor, President; Mohammed Alhassan, Vice President; Clara Korkor Dugbatey Quame, General Secretary; Samuel Frimpong, Projects and Programmes Coordinator; Dominic Appiagyei, Treasurer; Edmund Kofi Selasi Dzodzegbe, Media Coordinator; and Edwin Mensah-Sabrah, Public Relations Officer.

The executives were sworn into office after taking the oath administered by Joyce Frimpong, who urged them to discharge their duties with dedication, discipline, and commitment to civic responsibility.

Delivering the keynote address, the Central Regional Director of the NCCE, Madam Mercy Essien, advised the newly elected executives and students to place service above personal ambition and demonstrate integrity, fairness, accountability, and discipline in their leadership roles.

She encouraged the student leaders to remain accountable to those they serve, speak against wrongdoing, uphold integrity above convenience, and remain patriotic in protecting the future of Ghana.

Madam Essien cautioned students against electing leaders based on friendship, ethnicity, familiarity, or inducement. She explained that leadership choices have far-reaching consequences and must be based on competence, character, vision, humility, and integrity.

“Leadership should never be viewed as an opportunity for personal status or privilege but rather as a call to responsibility and service,” she stressed.

She further called on the University of Cape Coast to continue producing graduates with strong moral character in addition to academic excellence.

“Let this university continue to produce graduates with certificates and citizens with character; not only intellectuals with knowledge but leaders with integrity,” she stated.

Madam Essien urged all stakeholders to work together to build a generation that will strengthen democracy, uphold the rule of law, promote accountability, and contribute to national development.

The Civic Education Club is expected to provide students with a platform to participate in civic education activities, discuss national issues, develop leadership skills, and promote responsible citizenship within the university community and beyond.

The NCCE reiterated its commitment to empowering young people through civic education programmes that foster responsible citizenship and strengthen Ghana’s democratic governance.

The event was published in the Thursday, May 28, 2026, edition of the Daily Graphic newspaper on page 19 with the caption, “Shun vote buying in campus elections: NCCE charges students.”
