NCCE Inaugurates Civic Education Club at Nsawam Medium Security Prison

As part of initiatives to continuously promote civic consciousness, instil national values, and foster responsible citizenship, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has inaugurated a Civic Education Club (CEC) at the Educational and Reformational Facilities of the Nsawam Medium Security Prison. This move further reaffirms the Commission’s effort to ensure that all segments of society, including persons in correctional institutions, benefit from the civic engagements that are carried out across the nation.

Addressing the participants, Director of Programmes of the Commission, Dr. Imurana Mohammed, underscored the importance of civic education as a lifelong learning process that empowers individuals to understand and perform their civic duties responsibly. He similarly highlighted the transformative role of civic education in rehabilitation, reintegration, and nation-building.

Reiterating NCCE’s commitment to reaching every stratum of society with civic messages, the Eastern Regional Director of NCCE, Ms. Ophelia Ankrah, accompanied by her deputy, Mr. Augustine Bosrotsi, hailed this collaboration established between the Commission and the Ghana Prisons Service. She also indicated plans to plant more chapters of the Civic Education Club among vulnerable communities.

On the side of the Ghana Prisons Service, Officer-in-Charge of the Educational and Reformational Facilities, Chief Superintendent of Prisons (CSP) Paul Nutekpo, welcomed the initiative and expressed appreciation to NCCE for the partnership. He emphasized the critical role of education in the reform process and expressed optimism that the CEC would inspire positive behavioural change and enhance democratic values among inmates.

The Civic Education Club will also serve as a platform for structured civic learning sessions on topics such as the Constitution, Rule of Law, Fundamental Human Rights, National Values, and Responsibilities of Citizenship.

The programme witnessed active audience participation as Mr. Emmanuel Otoo, who is the Director of NCCE’s Office in the Nsawam-Adoagyiri Municipality, facilitated the engagement and led the establishment of the Club.
