The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Ga West Municipal Office, in collaboration with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), has organized an environmental education program for students at St. Joseph Roman Catholic Basic School at Amasaman as part of activities marking World Environment Day 2026.
The program, held on Friday, June 12, 2026, was under the theme, “Inspired by Nature for Climate and the Future.”
Speaking during the program, Civic Education Officer at the NCCE, Mr. Castro Kofi Appiah, educated the students on their constitutional responsibilities under Article 41(k) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which enjoins every citizen to protect and safeguard the environment.
He emphasized that environmental protection is not solely the responsibility of adults but also of children and urged the students to cultivate positive environmental habits. He further encouraged them to work collectively to maintain cleanliness in their schools and communities.
Mr. Benjamin Opong of the Greater Accra West Regional Office of the EPA educated the students on the importance of tree planting in combating climate change and improving environmental quality.
He also highlighted the value of waste as a resource and encouraged the students to adopt waste segregation, recycling, and reuse practices. He cautioned against littering and open burning, stressing their harmful effects on human health and the environment.
Mr. Opong challenged the students to become ambassadors for environmental protection by promoting good environmental practices among their peers, families, and communities.
The program formed part of ongoing efforts by the NCCE and EPA to promote environmental stewardship and responsible citizenship among young people in the Ga West Municipality.
