NCCE Engages Women’s Groups in Nsoatre on the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption

The Sunyani West Municipal Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has organised a one-day follow-up civic engagement programme for identified women’s groups in Nsoatre to deepen their understanding of the rule of law, anti-corruption measures, transparency and accountability. Held at the Presbyterian Church of Ghana in Nsoatre, the programme sought to consolidate knowledge acquired during an earlier engagement and empower women to become active advocates for integrity and accountability in their communities. The initiative was funded by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and the European Union (EU), in partnership with the Ministry of Finance and the Government of Ghana.

Addressing the participants, the Sunyani West Municipal Director of the NCCE, Ms. Margaret Abrafi Appiah, encouraged women to take an active interest in the governance of the country and contribute meaningfully to national growth and development. She emphasised the importance of making effective use of anti-corruption institutions and established reporting mechanisms to expose corrupt practices and promote transparency and accountability.

Discussions centred on participants’ experiences since the initial engagement, particularly how they had applied their knowledge of the rule of law in everyday situations, identified and responded to corrupt practices, and addressed challenges associated with reporting corruption. Attention was also given to existing legal protections, available reporting mechanisms, and practical ways of promoting integrity within women’s associations and local communities.

During the interactive session, participants related the issues discussed to their daily experiences and shared instances in which they had resisted or challenged practices they considered unfair, unethical or potentially corrupt. These experiences provided an opportunity for participants to reflect on their individual and collective responsibilities in promoting ethical conduct, upholding the rule of law and holding individuals and institutions accountable for their actions.

Ms. Appiah further encouraged the participants to extend the knowledge acquired to other women and community members to broaden public awareness of the importance of integrity and accountability. She urged them to champion ethical values within their families, associations and communities, stressing that their active involvement was essential to collective efforts to prevent corruption and strengthen good governance.
