The National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), through its Atiwa East District Office, on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, organized a civic engagement programme for students and staff of Akyem Sekyere SDA Senior High School at the school’s Assembly Hall to educate the youth on the rule of law, ethical leadership, and the fight against corruption.
The programme, held under the Commission’s “Civic Engagements on the Rule of Law and the Fight Against Corruption” initiative, sought to equip students with knowledge on accountability, transparency, conflict of interest, and the importance of upholding integrity in national development.
Addressing participants, the Atiwa East District Director of the NCCE, Saviour Ametefe, described corruption as one of the major obstacles to Ghana’s development and urged students to cultivate honesty, discipline, and accountability in their daily lives. He explained that civic responsibility begins with simple actions such as obeying school regulations, avoiding examination malpractice, protecting public property, and speaking against wrongdoing.
Mr. Ametefe further encouraged students to actively participate in civic education activities to deepen their understanding of democratic governance and responsible citizenship.
Also speaking at the event was Joseph Agbeko, District Director of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), who educated participants on human rights, ethical leadership, influence peddling, and abuse of office. He stressed that all citizens are equal before the law and called on students to uphold fairness, justice, and accountability.
He also highlighted the importance of whistleblowing in combating corruption and encouraged participants to report unethical practices through the appropriate legal channels.
The program was coordinated by Rita Nyantekyi, who also delivered a presentation on leadership and life after senior high school. She advised students to remain focused, disciplined, and committed to developing values and skills that would prepare them for higher education, employment, and responsible adulthood.
The engagement featured interactive discussions and a question-and-answer session, allowing students to share their views on leadership, corruption, and civic responsibility.
The initiative forms part of the NCCE’s broader efforts to empower young people with the knowledge, values, and civic consciousness needed to strengthen democracy, accountability, and integrity in Ghana.
