NCCE Educates Students on Responsible Digital Citizenship During Citizenship Week Celebration in Bolgatanga Municipality

As children increasingly navigate a rapidly evolving digital world, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Bolgatanga Municipal Office, has intensified efforts to equip young people with the knowledge and values required to use digital platforms responsibly. Through the 2026 Citizenship Week Celebration, the Commission engaged students in Junior and Senior High Schools across the municipality on their rights, responsibilities, and conduct in the online space.

The Citizenship Week Celebration, one of the flagship programmes of the NCCE, was organized under the theme “Growing Up Digital: The Ghanaian Child Upholding the Constitution Online.” The initiative sought to educate students on the opportunities and challenges associated with digital technology while encouraging them to uphold constitutional values both online and offline.

As part of the celebration, civic education activities were carried out in thirty-two (32) Junior and Senior High Schools across the Bolgatanga Municipality. The engagements focused on helping students understand their role as responsible digital citizens in an era where technology has become an integral part of everyday life.

During the sessions, students were informed that digital platforms such as smartphones, social media applications, online learning platforms, and gaming spaces offer enormous opportunities for education, innovation, creativity, communication, and global exposure. However, resource persons also highlighted the risks associated with the digital environment, including misinformation, cyberbullying, online scams, privacy breaches, identity theft, and exposure to inappropriate content.

Furthermore, participants were reminded that actions taken online can have real-life consequences. They were therefore encouraged to exercise caution, think critically before sharing information, and demonstrate respect for others when interacting in digital spaces. The facilitators emphasized that the values enshrined in the Constitution of Ghana, including respect, responsibility, and accountability, should guide their conduct both online and offline.

The programme also underscored the importance of protecting personal information, verifying information before sharing it, and using digital technology for educational and productive purposes. Students were encouraged to become positive digital ambassadors who contribute to creating a safe and respectful online environment.

Through interactive discussions and question-and-answer sessions, students actively participated and shared their experiences regarding social media use and online interactions. The engagements provided a valuable platform for learners to better understand their rights and responsibilities as digital citizens.

The NCCE remains committed to promoting civic education among young people and empowering them with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the digital age responsibly. The Citizenship Week Celebration continues to serve as an important platform for nurturing informed, responsible, and law-abiding citizens who can contribute meaningfully to national development.
