The National Commission for Civic Education, NCCE has called on the Ghanaian citizenry to be security conscious in all their endeavors. In an Inter – Party Dialogue Committee (IPDC) meeting organized by the Denkyembour District Directorate – Akwatia, the District Director, Ernest Eli Billy Kwami called on stakeholders and the entire citizenry to be security conscious at all times for early detection and prevention of violent extremist activities.
Focusing on the theme “Preventing Electoral Violence and Providing Security to the Northern Border Regions of Ghana (NORPREVSEC), the District Director emphasized that the mandate of the IPDC as constituted by the Commission is to promote peace and resolve conflicts among political actors, hence the objectives of the event thus: to re-enforce the role of political parties as key stakeholders in the efforts to prevent the likely spill – over of extremist activities into Ghana and also to deepen the existing collaboration between the NCCE and all stakeholders.
In order to curb political/electoral violence and protect public peace and safety, political parties must refrain from engaging in acts that will mar our peaceful nation, Mr. Kwami said. It is for this reason the Public Order Act, 1994 (Act 491) and the Vigilantism & Related Offences Act, 2019 (Act 999) coupled with Criminal Offences Act, 1960 were enacted, he explained.
Mr. Ernest Eli Billy Kwami commended the European Union for their support towards the activity and the National Security for coming up with the National Security Strategy (NSS) that will ensure the protection of national peace.
The Eastern Regional Director of NCCE, Alex Sackey alluded that, the development of the National Security Strategy has come at the right time since the identified factors that may propel violence are not only international but currently emerging domestically. He charged stakeholders to help avoid the domestic factors because according to him, it will serve as the foundation for any foreign invasion or a breeding ground for violence activities by unemployed youth groups.
The National Security Coordinator, Mr. Darlington Adjei-Bekoe took stakeholders through measures of preventing and countering activities of violent extremists as the political parties through their representatives present pledged their commitment to peace and stability.
The event formed part of series of activities of the Preventing Electoral Violence and Providing Security to the Northern Border Regions of Ghana project funded by the European Union which aims at countering violent extremism in the country.
