To combat the age-old worrying phenomenon of Gender-Based Violence, the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU) has called on the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to discuss how a fruitful collaboration can aid in curtailing the menace.
Gender-based Violence is harm, or threats to harm, that is committed against an individual based on actual or perceived sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, or other such sex/gender-related characteristics. Even though the menace cuts across both sexes, the number of cases recorded among females tends to be comparatively higher.
The Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, who also served as leader of the delegation, DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, expressed concern about how this existential threat is almost normalised in our part of the world. On this score, she intimated, without mincing words, that NCCE is the appropriate partner to join forces with, making reference to the Commission's expertise in Public Education.
In addition, Head of DOVVSU, ACP Owusuaa Kyeremeh, established that NCCE's presence in every district is a momentous asset they could leverage to ensure that messaging on mitigating or eradicating Gender-Based Violence reaches every nook and cranny of the country. The meeting also offered an opportunity for the officers to bring into focus the “DOVVSU One-Stop-Centre”, a rounded facility built and managed by the Ghana Police Service to provide clinical, social, and psychological intervention for victims of domestic violence.
Meanwhile, Deputy Chair, General Services, Mr. Victor Brobbey, on behalf of the Commission, expressed delight and enthusiasm towards this partnership. According to him, it is a timely social intervention needed among the citizenry.
He assured the Police of the utmost support and cooperation of members of staff in a bid to yield the expected result of this collaboration, indicating that the Commission has the expertise to drum home the message, given the availability of the required resources.
