Eastern Regional Office extends NCCE’S Constitution Week Celebration to Security Officers

They are the men called to lead the charge of defending the 1992 Constitution of the Republic of Ghana. For this special recognition, it is imperative for officers of the various security services in the country to be abreast of content of the legal framework they are obliged to safeguard.

It is on this premise that the Eastern Regional Office of the National Commission for Civic Education engaged personnel at the Koforidua Offices of the Customs Division of Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) and Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), as well as recruits at the Regional Police Training School. These sessions are in commemoration of the Commission’s annual flagship programme, “the Constitution Week Celebration”.

The distinct sessions with the respective agencies saw staff of NCCE rehashing some provisions of the 1992 Constitution, especially the ones that remind the participants of their call to the service of our dear nation.

Establishing the essence of the programme, Eastern Regional Director of the Commission, Ms. Ophelia Ankrah, took the officers down memory lane to a moment in the history of Ghana where citizens were at a crossroads to either sustain the military rule it had endured for the past years or charter a new path of democracy, which has since allowed citizens to freely have a say in the governance system.

She highlighted how citizens, in a referendum, communed with democracy, which resulted in the birth of the 1992 Constitution, serving as the supreme law of the land thereafter. The Regional Director subsequently admonished the officers to awaken and stay alert to the mandate they have been tasked with, as stipulated in the Fourth Republican Constitution. She, however, patted them on the back for the tremendous show of professionalism during the 2024 Presidential and Parliamentary elections, and urged them to keep up with the good work.

Meanwhile, Ms. Ankrah prompted the recruits at the Regional Police Training School to imbibe the tenets of patriotism, national cohesion, discipline, tolerance, accountability, and the others that the legal framework prescribes, emphasising that they will serve as their watchwords and benchmarks when they eventually progress into active service.

The audience, on the sidelines of the sessions, were full of praise for the Commission for serving them with such insights, which they indicated will remain at the back of their minds in their endeavours. They also called for more frequent interactions, as they will grant them a learning opportunity.

Facilitators of the engagements included the Regional Director, Ms. Ophelia Ankrah, her deputies, Mr. Augustine Bosrotsi and Ms. Juliet Simpey. Accompanying them were other members of staff of the Regional Office.
