Desist from sharing fake news – NCCE Chairperson urges Ghanaian youth

The Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education, Kathleen Addy has urged Ghanaian youth and senior high school members of the civic club to be considerate in the kind of content they share on social media ahead of the December 7 general elections.

While engaging Senior High School club members on Saturday, August 10, 2024, at the 2024 edition of Civic Fest held at the Ghana Association of Teachers Hall, Ms. Addy noted that the emergence of technology and social media has made it easy to misinform the public. “Many of you were born in age that has seen a lot of change regarding the way information is shared. Because of social media, sharing false news has become very easy.”

She explained that fake news could potentially disrupt the appropriate course of electoral processes and could only be propagated by certain individuals to tarnish the image of subjective opposition or respective opponents in society.

Ms. Kathleen Addy charged patrons to fight against the spread of fake news which aligns with one of the thematic areas of this year’s Civic Fest – Misinformation, Disinformation of Fake News. “You are young so you have greater destinies than most of us who have already gone ahead. The change starts with you; do not engage in sharing fake news; when someone shares false information with you do not share it, tell the person not to share such things with you again.”
