Cheer one another on to take up positions at high decision-making places – Commission Secretary to Women

For decades immemorial, the adage that “women are their own enemies” has continued to gain ground, especially in this part of the world. It is purported that women are quicker to hold back their fellow gender mates from climbing the ladder of success.

This assertion has become a source of worry for the Commission Secretary of the National Commission for Civic Education, Lawyer Mrs. Lucille Hewlett Annan, as she pointed it out during an engagement with the Odorkor Chapter of the Ghana Hairdressers and Beauticians Association. This engagement is in line with NCCE’s collaborative programme with the European Partnership for Democracy, which is targeted at the youth and women of Ghana.

Lawyer Annan, in her interaction with the women, mentioned that women form about fifty-one percent (51%) of the country’s population and hence ought to have occupied a good number of the slots available at high decision-making places to satisfy proper gender representation benchmarks.

She thus charged them to garner the necessary knowledge and hone their skill sets to give them a good chance of occupying such positions when they become vacant. “It is not enough to wish to be part of the decision-making body, but you have to make sure that you are meritorious of the slot so that questions will not be raised about your competencies”, she advised.

On the other hand, the Commission Secretary extended NCCE’s commendation to them for upholding peace and tranquility after the elections, urging them to stick to that path.

Lawyer Annan additionally implored the women to encourage their children, especially those within the youth bracket, to desist from any form of disturbance that has the tendency to disrupt the prevailing peace. “These are your children, and I believe you will not be happy if they find themselves on the wrong side of the law; the reason you should advise them to stay away from trouble and rather focus on building a better future for themselves”, she opined.
