Asuogyaman NCCE Office Marks 33 Years of Constitutional Democracy under the Fourth Republic with Civic Outreaches

The Asuogyaman District office of the NCCE has commemorated Ghana’s 33 years of constitutional democracy under the Fourth Republican Constitution with field outreaches as part of its activities to commemorate the Commission’s Annual Constitution Week celebrations. The Constitution Week was instituted by the NCCE to mark the day on which the 1992 Constitution was adopted as the fundamental law of Ghana through a referendum on April 28, 1992. From that day until now, Ghana’s return to democratic governance has remained stable and steady under the Fourth Republic.

This year, the Asuogyaman NCCE office visited various groups and locations, including God’s Gift Metal & Fabrication Works in Mangoase, Akosombo Market Square, Kings Palace Football Club, and Atimpoku Lorry Station, to educate the public on civic responsibilities.

During an interview with Kobby Kyei News, Mr. Alexander Yiadom Boakye, the Asuogyaman NCCE Director, cautioned citizens, particularly the youth, against entertaining thoughts of military takeovers, despite growing frustrations over unemployment, corruption, and poor service delivery. He highlighted the dark period of unconstitutional rule between 1960 and 1980, contrasting it with the democratic gains achieved over the past three decades. He urged the youth to channel their energy into active participation in democracy by holding leaders accountable through lawful means such as voting, advocacy, civic pressure, and peaceful protests.

As part of the outreach, Ms. Emelda N. A. Amankwa, in an open-broadcast at Akosombo Market, encouraged the public to uphold peace and report wrongdoing to appropriate institutions like the Police or CHRAJ. She reminded citizens of their civic duty under Article 41 of the 1992 Constitution and stressed the importance of tax compliance as a tool for national development. Looking ahead, the Asuogyaman NCCE office plans to engage okada riders, security services, faith-based organisations, and other groups during the 2025 edition of the Commission’s Annual Constitution Week.
