Wa Senior High School CEC Members Exposed to the Supreme Court

Best described as an insightful experience, members of the Wa Senior High School Civic Education Club (CEC) have had the opportunity to pay an institutional visit to the highest court of the land, the Supreme Court of Ghana. The visit is part of strategic efforts to provide a platform for civic education club members in various educational institutions to gain firsthand experience with and gather knowledge on the operations of some significant institutions in the country, whether state-owned or private.

The Civic Education Club (CEC) is NCCE’s mode of mobilizing and raising civic-conscious students at the various levels of the educational ladder, including the basic, senior high, and tertiary levels.

In a welcome address, Ms. Angela Addy highlighted the hierarchy of Ghana’s court system, indicating that there are two major segmentations: the lower courts (which capture the district, juvenile, and circuit courts) and the superior courts, which include the high court, the court of appeal, and the supreme court.

The students were also given a tour of the Supreme Court premises, where they had the opportunity to sit in a live case hearing in a circuit courtroom. Subsequent to a warm reception, the presiding judge and other court officers enlightened the young ones on the proceedings of a courtroom. They were also educated on the various components of the courtroom, their meanings, and functions.

Meanwhile, the group bumped into the former Member of Parliament for Asante-Akyem North, the Honourable Andy Appiah-Kubi Esq., who was kind enough to share his wealth of experience at the bar with the students. He emphasized the essence of perseverance and hard work for anyone who wants to embark on the journey to become a legal practitioner.
