Unity, accountability, participatory governance, recipe for national development – NCCE

Director of Human Resources Department at the National Commission for Civic Education, Ms. Peace Kondo has rallied Ghanaians to, as a matter of necessity, contribute their quota towards the development of our nation.

She made this call during a sensitisation session with the Kaneshie Market Women Association in Accra as part of NCCE’s collaborative mission with the European Partnership for Democracy, targeted at the youth and women who form a majority of the population but are not given the deserved priority in the governance system.

Addressing the market women, Ms. Kondo praised them for their initiative of seeing the need to assemble as women and form the association to deliberate on matters of concern to them towards their betterment. She urged them to stay united irrespective of their diverse backgrounds and dissenting viewpoints. “Your ability to put yourself together.

The HR Director also admonished them to show interest in local governance, pointing out, it is the way they can stimulate development in their various districts. “Put yourselves up to contest for assembly and unit committee membership positions”, she charged, adding, “that is how you can fast-track your grievances to receive the required attention”.

As important as elections are, they will amount to nothing if the elected are left to run the country at their whim without recourse to systematic procedures. Accountability is therefore crucial in ensuring that those at the helm of affairs are not abusing the power handed to them by the electorates. Ms. Kondo, in this light, encouraged the women to keep leadership on their toes by holding them to account for what they promise prior to elections and as spelt out in the laws.
