Sissala East Women Groups Promise Commitment to the Fight against Corruption

Women's groups comprising traders, co-operative groups, religious associations, among others, have promised to continue to demand transparency and accountability and also resist corrupt practices from duty bearers. This commitment was made at a forum in Tumu, the capital of the Sissala East Municipality, to reinforce the knowledge of women on anti-corruption and the rule of law and to reflect on a similar programme organized for them by the NCCE with support from GIZ and co- funded by the European Union last year.

Traders at Tumu market were able to curb the practice of revenue collectors issuing one receipt to about five women for the payment of taxes, while the Ahmadiyya women were able to organize a series of sensitization sessions for their members after the training. These were some of the impacts and successes of the training the women received last year.

The Municipal Co-ordinating Director, Mr Mohammed Zaid Yakubu, pledged the Assembly's willingness to the empowerment of women and their inclusion in the decision-making process. He responded to concerns about criteria for selection of the new beneficiaries of the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) programme, the purchase of maize by the Ghana Buffer Stock Company from the municipality and the selection of women's groups to benefit from the women's economic empowerment component of the Social Cohesion (SOCO)project.
