NCCE South Tongu Urges Pupils to Uphold Constitutional Values at Covenant International School Handover Ceremony

The South Tongu District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has encouraged pupils of Covenant International School, Tefle, to uphold the principles of the 1992 Constitution and appreciate the importance of democratic elections in leadership selection.

The call was made during the school’s handover ceremony, which brought together pupils, teachers, parents, and school authorities to witness the transition of student leadership.

As guest speakers at the event, NCCE officers engaged the pupils on the themes "Upholding Our Constitution in the Digital Age" and "The Importance of the Election Process Even at the Basic School Level".

Addressing the gathering, the officers emphasised that the 1992 Constitution is the supreme law of Ghana and applies to all citizens, regardless of age or status. They urged the pupils to understand their rights and responsibilities, respect the rule of law, and demonstrate responsible behaviour both offline and online.

The officers highlighted the growing influence of digital platforms in the lives of young people and cautioned against the misuse of social media. They encouraged the pupils to promote truth, respect, and responsible communication online while avoiding misinformation, cyberbullying, and other harmful practices.

On the importance of elections, the NCCE officers explained that the democratic processes practised within schools serve as a foundation for active citizenship and leadership development. They noted that electing class prefects and student leaders helps young people appreciate the values of fairness, accountability, participation, and peaceful coexistence.

The pupils were reminded that every vote matters and that participating in elections, even at the school level, helps nurture future leaders and responsible citizens who understand and respect democratic principles.

School authorities commended the NCCE South Tongu District Office for the insightful engagement, noting that the lessons reinforced the school's commitment to raising disciplined, responsible, and patriotic young citizens.

The ceremony concluded with the official handover of leadership responsibilities to newly elected student representatives, who pledged to serve their colleagues with integrity, dedication, and a strong sense of responsibility.

The engagement forms part of NCCE’s ongoing efforts to promote constitutional literacy, democratic values, and responsible citizenship among young people across the country.
