The Western Regional Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has sensitized members of the Antiemuah community on key child protection issues, including child labor, child trafficking, child marriage and drug abuse.
The sensitization exercise formed part of the Commission’s ongoing efforts to strengthen awareness of child rights and protection at the grassroots level across the Western Region.
Using UNICEF flash cards to facilitate discussion, the Western Regional Director of the NCCE, Mr. Andrews Ofori Larbi, and his Deputy, Mr. Lan Kwame Tugbenu, took turns to educate participants on the various child protection concerns.
Speaking on child labor, Mr. Ofori Larbi urged parents and guardians to feel free to introduce their children to family livelihoods and other appropriate skills but cautioned that such activities should not interfere with their education, wellbeing, or overall development.
On child marriage, participants were reminded that marriage involving persons below the age of 18 is prohibited. The facilitators also explained some of the legal frameworks that safeguard the rights and welfare of children, including the 1992 Constitution, the Domestic Violence Act, 2007 (Act 732), the Child and Family Welfare Policy, and Sections 59 to 68 of the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038), which provide measures relating to the protection of children in the digital environment.
The engagement was attended by the Chief of Antiemuah, Nana Kow Krah II, and his elders. They commended the NCCE for the timely and impactful initiative and pledged their continued support for the Commission’s civic education activities in the community.
The exercise underscored the importance of collective responsibility among parents, traditional authorities and community members in protecting children from abuse, exploitation and other threats to their wellbeing.
