The North Gonja Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) observed the New Patriotic Party (NPP) branch elections held in Daboya from May 14 to 16, 2026, as part of its mandate to promote democratic governance, political tolerance, and peaceful participation in electoral processes.
The observation exercise took place at various election centres within the North Gonja District. It was aimed at monitoring the general conduct of the internal party elections and encouraging compliance with democratic principles, peaceful participation, and orderly electoral conduct.
During the three-day exercise, the Directorate observed that the elections were generally peaceful, orderly, and transparent. Electoral officers, party officials, security personnel, delegates, and party members cooperated to support the smooth conduct of the process.
Delegates were allowed to participate freely in the elections, while the presence of security personnel at the centres helped maintain law and order. The Directorate also observed that most participants conducted themselves in a manner that supported peaceful democratic engagement.
Some misunderstandings and disagreements were recorded at a few centres. However, these were resolved through dialogue and did not escalate into violence. The Directorate further noted some challenges, including delays in the commencement of voting at some centres, limited voter education on electoral procedures, and occasional tension among supporters of some contesting candidates.
The NCCE North Gonja Directorate encouraged political parties to strengthen civic and voter education for their members ahead of internal elections. It also urged party actors, candidates, supporters, and other stakeholders to continue promoting tolerance, dialogue, peaceful coexistence, and respect for democratic processes.
The Directorate reaffirmed the importance of peaceful internal party processes in strengthening Ghana’s democratic culture and called on all political actors to uphold unity, peace, and democratic values in the interest of development in the North Gonja District and the Savannah Region.
