In a vibrant celebration of World Environment Day, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) Fanteakwa South took a bold step towards promoting environmental governance among the youth. On June 5, 2025, the commission organised a dynamic tree planting exercise and art exhibition at Bososu Presbyterian Church, bringing together three selected schools: Bososu R/C, Bososu Presby, and Bososu Islamic.
The event kicked off at 10:00 am, with students showcasing their artistic talents through drama, poem recitals, and innovative art exhibitions. The theme “Ending Plastic Pollution—Reduce, Reuse, Recycle” resonated throughout the day, as learners displayed remarkable creativity in transforming plastic waste into functional items like bags, cars, nose masks, skipping ropes, and key holders.
In an engaging educational session, Madam Maame Adwoa Korankye-Duah emphasised the importance of protecting the environment by reducing plastic use, proper waste segregation, and reusing plastic waste. Mr. Kwadwo Adu-Asare, District Director of NCCE, highlighted the multifaceted benefits of tree planting, including windbreaks, soil erosion prevention, fresh air, and beautification.
The tree planting exercise saw the planting of three tree seedlings on each school compound, with two palm trees and one coconut tree taking root. The event was attended by NCCE officials, school authorities, and students, demonstrating the commission’s commitment to environmental sustainability and civic education.
The headmistress of Bososu Presby School, Madam Rev. Betty, expressed her joy for NCCE’s initiative, noting the positive impact of the commission’s collaboration with the school. Each participating school was awarded a certificate for their active participation. As the program came to a close at 1:25 pm, the learners were left with a newfound appreciation for environmental stewardship and a sense of responsibility to protect the planet.
This celebration marked a significant milestone in NCCE’s efforts to promote environmental governance and civic education among the youth. As the commission continues to inspire a love for nature and a commitment to sustainability, the future of Ghana’s environment looks brighter than ever.
