A picture, comment, or message shared online may take only seconds to post, but its consequences can last much longer. To help young people make safer choices in the digital space, the Essikadu Ketan Sub-Metro of the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolitan Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) educated pupils of Ketan M.A. Basic School on online safety and cybersecurity.
The engagement formed part of the Commission’s civic education efforts to equip children with knowledge to navigate the internet responsibly.
The resource persons, Ms. Mavis Amoakohene, Assistant Director, and Mr. Solomon Ofosu, Civic Education Officer, educated the pupils on responsible online behavior and the real-life consequences of their digital activities.
The pupils were cautioned against sharing nude or inappropriate pictures online and were encouraged to desist from cyberbullying their friends. They were also advised not to disclose personal or sensitive information on digital platforms, particularly to strangers or unknown persons.
The resource persons further urged the pupils to think carefully about the potential impact of information before sharing it, stressing the importance of responsible digital citizenship.
Beyond online safety, the pupils were encouraged to take their education seriously and regard their books as their best friends. They were reminded that their performance at the basic education level could influence their next steps in education and their future opportunities.
The engagement equipped the pupils with practical knowledge to stay safe online while encouraging them to combine responsible digital behaviour with a strong commitment to their education.
