NCCE Central Gonja Engages Buipe SHS Civic Education Club on Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption

The Central Gonja District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education has engaged members of the Civic Education Club of Buipe Senior High School on the rule of law, ethical leadership, public accountability, and the fight against corruption.

Held on 20th May 2026 at the Buipe Senior High School campus at Bilsikura, a community near Buipe in the Savannah Region, the face-to-face interaction formed part of an NCCE initiative supported by the European Union and GIZ. The programme sought to strengthen civic awareness among young people and promote integrity in public and institutional life.

Participants included students, teachers, the Assistant Headmaster, Mr. Ali Jamal, and the Patron of the Civic Education Club, Mr. Sayibu Issifu. They were taken through key topics such as ethical leadership, conflict of interest, influence peddling, the rule of law, and public accountability.

Addressing the students, the Central Gonja District Director of the NCCE, Mr. Suuk Y. Cletus, sensitised them on the importance of respecting the rule of law and rejecting corrupt practices in all forms. He explained that accountability requires duty bearers to answer to the public for the resources, responsibilities, and authority entrusted to them.

According to Mr. Suuk, corruption is not limited to public office but can also occur in schools and other institutions. He cited examination malpractice, school placement processes, and SRC or prefect elections as areas where dishonest conduct may arise, especially when gifts, favours, or undue influence are used to affect decisions.

Students were encouraged to uphold honesty, fairness, discipline, and responsibility in their academic and leadership roles. Mr. Suuk noted that young people must understand the dangers of corruption early and develop values that will guide them to become responsible citizens and ethical leaders.

Taking his turn, Mr. Clement Laar, Director of the Assemblies of God Children and Youth Development Centre in Buipe, educated participants on the Whistleblower Act, 2006 (Act 720). He explained the importance of reporting wrongdoing through appropriate channels and encouraged students to speak up against corruption and misconduct without fear.

By the end of the programme, participants had gained a deeper appreciation of ethical leadership, the rule of law, and accountability as essential pillars of good governance. Students were encouraged to serve as ambassadors of integrity in their school, homes, and communities.
