This year marks the 10th anniversary of the International Day of the Girl Child. Over the years, women and girls have been recognized and given opportunities and a voice on both local and global stages. However, girls still face alarming issues like child marriage, unavailability/ inadequate sanitary conditions, violence, and abuse. The theme for this year’s celebration is, “Our time is now—our rights, our future”.
As enshrined in Articles 12 to 30, particularly 17, 21, 22, and 25, women are entitled to their fundamental human rights and freedoms to promote a better Ghana. As the saying goes, “If you educate a man, you educate an individual, but if you educate a woman, you educate a nation”.
Some identified opportunities include women’s participation in governance, improvement in sanitary conditions, and improvement in education. Just like a seedling is nurtured well to bloom into a tree, girls provided with opportunities and nurtured grow into responsible change-makers in the future.
NCCE encourages all and sundry to partner and cultivate the great potential of women and girls for the development and sustainability of the nation.
