The Banda District Office of the National Commission for Civic Education, in collaboration with the Banda District Assembly, has carried out a clean-up exercise at Weiwa as part of activities marking National Sanitation Day.
The exercise, held from 21st to 22nd May 2026, formed part of efforts to promote environmental cleanliness, community participation, and responsible citizenship within the Banda District. It also sought to encourage residents to take collective responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean and safe.
As part of the collaboration, the NCCE was tasked with publicising the exercise and mobilising members of the Weiwa community to participate. Using the Commission’s office vehicle, officers moved through the community to announce the activity, encourage public involvement, and remind residents of the importance of sanitation to community wellbeing.
Speaking ahead of the exercise, the Banda District Director of the NCCE, Mr. Simon Boahen, urged community members to make themselves available and actively participate in the clean-up. He stressed that sanitation is a shared responsibility and that every resident has a role to play in maintaining a healthy environment.
Mr. Boahen noted that a clean environment helps reduce the spread of diseases, prevents flooding caused by choked gutters and poor waste disposal, improves movement within communities, and enhances the general quality of life. He therefore encouraged residents not to see sanitation as the responsibility of the Assembly alone, but as a civic duty that requires the active involvement of all.
He further admonished community members to avoid indiscriminate dumping of refuse and to support regular communal clean-up activities. According to him, sustained public participation in sanitation exercises would help protect lives, improve public health, and promote a more orderly and attractive community.
Residents were encouraged to come out in their numbers, clean their surroundings, desilt gutters, clear weeds, and support efforts aimed at improving sanitation in Weiwa.
The exercise formed part of the NCCE’s broader mandate to promote civic responsibility and encourage citizens to participate actively in activities that contribute to community development and national progress.
