NCCE AND THE CATHOLIC BISHOPS CONFERENCE INTERACT

The National Commission for Civic Education, NCCE had a fruitful interactive session with the Catholic Bishop Conference in Accra. The meeting is part of the Commission’s ‘2024 Election Consultative Visits’ to relevant bodies in our democratic space. This follows a recent visit by the Commission on the Asantehene, His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Council of State, the Military High Command, and the Speaker of Parliament, among others.

The Commission’s ongoing engagements are guided by its theme for the year, ‘Together we can build Ghana, So Get Involved’. This is a deliberate move to bring on board all relevant stakeholders and the people of Ghana to get involved in nation-building efforts and actively participate in this year’s polls.

Chairperson of NCCE, Ms. Kathleen Addy has been fronting these engagements with the conviction that all these stakeholders have critical roles in helping build Ghana.

Making an appearance before the Catholic Bishop Conference on Tuesday, 7^th May, 2024, Ms. Addy highlighted the Commission’s plans for this year. She mentioned what has been achieved so far and what to expect in the later months.

She stated that the Commission has four thematic areas driving its civic education engagements this year. She mentioned public education on money in politics and vote buying, religious tolerance, Mis/Disinformation/misinformation/fake news, electoral violence and general voter education and peace.

Ms. Addy narrated the successes chalked up and the positive feedback received from previous engagements undertaken. She called on the Catholic Bishop Conference to support Civic Education activities across the country and continue to offer special prayers for the Commission and the country.

The President of the Conference, Bishop Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi thanked the NCCE for the visit and the great work it is offering to the people of Ghana. He called on the Commission to intensify public education on patriotism. Other members at the Conference expressed worry over the lack of civic education in the country’s educational curriculum.

The NCCE is poised to engage and remind all citizens and relevant stakeholders to get involved in our collective effort to build Ghana.
