St Joseph’s RC Basic School came first in the Greater Accra Region edition of the Interfaith Shaping Hearts, Attitudes and Mindset to End (I-SHAME) Corruption in Ghana quiz competition held in Accra. The National Catholic Secretariat (NCS) partnered the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) to create awareness on the evils and effects of corruption among the Ghanaian youth using quizzes, debates, discussions and essay competitions to nib in the bud the canker in the society.
The quiz was between St. Joseph’s RC Basic School and Kanda 3&5 JHS both in Adabraka, Accra. The aim was to assess the students’ knowledge of Integrity and Corruption, Government efforts at curbing corruption, and how students can join in the fight against corruption. Both schools were represented by students from Integrity clubs in their schools.
The Deputy Chairman in charge of Operations, Mr. Samuel Asare Akuamoah in his remarks expressed appreciation of the NCCE to NCS for the collaboration and STAR-Ghana for their funding. He urged the students to put whatever they have learned into practice. Mr. Akuamoah stated that students who cheat their way through school end up becoming a threat to society. This is because they lack the qualification to work. “You are the agents of change. Therefore I urge you all to do your best wherever you find yourselves to fight corruption,” he added.
The Executive Secretary of the NCS, Mr. Samuel Zan Akologo expressed gratitude to the NCCE and the Ghana Education Service (GES) for their support in the fight against corruption. He stated that NCS is working tirelessly to fight against corruption. According to him, most adults who are caught in the act of corruption use their children as an excuse. “The integrity of your family is very important, so tell your parents how negative corruption would affect your future.”
The Greater Accra Regional Director of the NCCE, Mrs. Lucille Annan, thanked the NCS for the great initiative to fight against corruption by focusing on the youth. She also thanked STAR-Ghana for their sponsorship. She advised the students to tell their friends about the need to fight against corrupt practices they see, like examination malpractices, stealing among others.
At the end of the competition, St Joseph’s RC Basic School had 108 points and Kanda JHS 3&5 had 86 points. The winners took away books, pens, storybooks, and a sum of GHC 350. Kanda 3&5 JHS were not left out in the prizes as they also received books, pens, story
