The Eastern Regional Office of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in partnership with Fidelity Bank Ghana Limited, has embarked on a community climate action and clean-up exercise at Otrokper Proper and Otrokper Ochirebentoa in the Upper Manya Krobo District.
The exercise, held under the theme “Protecting Our Environment: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle”, forms part of efforts to respond to Ghana’s growing climate and environmental challenges—especially plastic waste pollution, poor sanitation, and deforestation. The initiative also reinforces civic responsibility as outlined in Article 41(k) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana, which mandates citizens to protect and safeguard the environment.
Addressing community members after the exercise, the Eastern Regional Director of the NCCE, Madam Ophelia Ankrah, commended the chiefs—Dademantse Kaizer David and Dademantse Saki Narh—as well as the Assembly Member for the Otrokper Electoral Area, Hon. Terkper Sampson Nartey, the NCCE Upper Manya District Director, Mr. Eric Yanney, and residents for their active participation.
She encouraged the community to institutionalize regular communal labour days to ensure the initiative does not end as a one-off activity. According to her, a consistent community-led clean-up culture promotes environmental ownership, reduces sanitation-related diseases, and keeps the community safe and healthy. She also acknowledged Fidelity Bank Ghana Limited for partnering with the Commission on this important national campaign.
Madam Ankrah further urged residents to adopt the 3Rs environmental practice—Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle, particularly in the use of plastics.
The chiefs and the Assembly Member expressed their appreciation to the NCCE and Fidelity Bank Ghana for choosing their community and supporting efforts toward maintaining a cleaner environment.
