Guard your name, your faith, and your future – NCCE Ahafo Regional Director cautions

The Ahafo Regional Director of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), Mr. Eric Adu, Esq., has warned against the growing practice of allowing others to use their bank and mobile money accounts for financial transactions among the populace.

Speaking at the Sunyani South District Social Day of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, held at the Newtown Church in Sunyani, Mr. Adu highlighted the grave risks associated with such actions. He reminded participants that under Ghana’s Anti-Money Laundering Act, 2020 (Act 1044), account holders are legally accountable for all transactions conducted through their accounts, even when operated by others on their behalf.

“Many unsuspecting individuals have faced arrest, financial loss, and imprisonment simply for ‘helping’ others receive or withdraw money,” Mr. Adu asserted, stressing that ignorance of the law is no excuse.

The session also addressed the risks of sharing personal financial details, such as PINs, One-Time Passwords (OTPs), ATM cards, or SIM cards. The attendees were urged to reject requests involving betting, forex trading, cryptocurrency, or unclear online business deals, noting that such schemes often serve as conduits for fraud and money laundering.

He further emphasized the importance of safeguarding one’s integrity, reputation, and faith, adding that “a good name is better than riches.” According to him, protecting one’s financial identity is not only a matter of personal security but also a moral responsibility.

While the session formed part of the NCCE’s broader mandate to promote civic awareness and responsible citizenship, Mr. Adu reiterated the Commission’s commitment to educating the public on laws and practices that protect individuals and communities from exploitation and crime.
