A community football gala at Kwadaso Borla Kesiem became a rallying point for advancing adolescent health, gender equality and the prevention of gender-based violence, as residents and community leaders gathered to promote greater awareness of issues affecting young people. The initiative was organised by the Kwadaso Municipal Directorate of the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), in partnership with the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), with financial support from Global Affairs Canada.
The programme brought together football enthusiasts, families and local authorities for a three-match competition involving the Kwadaso Proper Sunday Special Team, the Nsiah Asare Saturday Special Team and other participating sides. Beyond the excitement on the field, the gathering provided an opportunity to engage residents on their collective responsibility to protect adolescents and create supportive environments for their development.
Among the dignitaries present were the Member of Parliament for the constituency, Hon. Prof. Kingsly Nyarko; the Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Eric Asibey; the Presiding Member of the Municipal Assembly, Hon. Kwabena Frimpong; and the Municipal Health Director, Madam Grace K. Billy. Others included the National Service Director, Mr. Marfo, the area Assembly Member, other Assembly Members, the Deputy Head of the Works Department and the Municipal Information Officer.
The Commission's leadership was represented by the Deputy Chairman in charge of General Services, Mr. Victor Brobey, Esq., and the Ashanti Regional Director, Madam Cynthia Anima Boadu.
Addressing spectators and players, Madam Boadu, Hon. Prof. Nyarko and Hon. Asibey emphasised the importance of parental involvement in safeguarding adolescents. They encouraged parents and guardians to pay closer attention to the concerns of young people, maintain open communication and provide the guidance necessary for their well-being. Adolescents were equally urged to speak up when confronted with challenges, particularly situations that threaten their safety and personal development.
The sporting contest produced an exciting final between the two special teams, which had emerged victorious in their earlier matches. After a closely contested encounter ended in a draw, Nsiah Asare Saturday Special secured victory through a penalty shootout.
For their achievement, the winners received gold medals, a trophy, branded T-shirts and caps, alongside a GH¢1,500 cash award. The runners-up received silver medals, similar branded items and an equal cash prize. Hon. Prof. Nyarko further donated GH¢2,000 to the finalists, while the area Assembly Member contributed GH¢1,000.
The initiative demonstrated how community sporting activities can create opportunities for meaningful public education, encouraging families, institutions and young people to work together in addressing challenges affecting adolescent well-being.
