To instil environmental consciousness among the younger generation, the Effia Kwesimintim Directorate of the NCCE has organised an educational session for students of Lagos Town M/A Basic School, focusing on the critical issue of indiscriminate waste disposal and its far-reaching effects on the environment.
Addressing the pupils, Mr Yusif Usman, a staff member of the Office, intimated that improper waste management is not merely an aesthetic concern but a critical environmental challenge with direct consequences on public health, sanitation, and climate resilience. He explained that indiscriminate dumping of refuse clogs drainage systems, exacerbates flooding during heavy rains, and contributes to the spread of diseases such as cholera and malaria.
He additionally encouraged the students to adopt responsible waste disposal habits both at school and within their communities, urging the pupils to become “ambassadors of cleanliness”. He noted that their voices and actions could influence households and neighbourhoods to embrace proper waste segregation and recycling practices.
Teachers at Lagos Town M/A Basic School lauded the initiative, noting that environmental education is essential in shaping responsible citizens. They called for more of such education to equip the young ones with knowledge about the dangers of indiscriminate waste disposal and ensure they grow into environmentally conscious adults. The students also expressed gratitude, pledging to inculcate the lessons learned into their daily lives.
