Unregulated political campaign financing driving corruption – GII

Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb TV at a maiden national dialogue organised by the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, she noted that the current Political Parties Act does not comprehensively address key issues, leaving gaps that undermine transparency and accountability.

“Our advocacy is grounded in the fact that if we can regulate the space in which political actors campaign, it will help anchor our politics firmly in law,” Addah said.

She explained that civil society groups, coordinated by the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD), are working collaboratively to address these gaps.

Addah further emphasised the importance of transparency in campaign financing.

“It is crucial to know who is funding campaigns and to set clear limits on contributions to prevent undue influence and ensure fairness,” she added.

The dialogue by the NCCE is an initiative under the “Strengthening the Rule of Law and Fight Against Corruption in Ghana” project, which forms part of the Participation, Accountability and Integrity for a Resilient Democracy (PAIReD) program.

The initiative is commissioned by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), co-financed by the European Union (EU) and the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), and implemented by GIZ.
