The National Commission for Civic Education, in pursuit of its “catch them young” agenda, has organized an educational visit for pupils of Faith Presbyterian Basic School to the Parliament of Ghana. This move is aimed at enhancing the students' understanding and appreciation of the democratic system adopted by our nation.
The school was ushered into the Public Gallery, where they were made to witness live parliamentary proceedings. Prior to this, however, a Public Engagement Officer at Parliament, Ms. Rachel Naa Amerley Tagoe, emphasized two important documents that aid in the proceedings at Ghana’s Parliament: the Votes and Proceedings Paper and the Order Paper.
“The Votes and Proceedings Paper is the green document that contains the minutes from previous meetings, while the Order Paper, a yellow document, has all the issues to be discussed at the present meeting”, Ms. Tagoe explained.
A major highlight of the School’s visit to Parliament was when they were afforded the opportunity to connect with the Member of Parliament for the Pru East Constituency, Hon. Emmanuel Kwaku Boam. The Hon. Boam commended the NCCE for the gesture, which, according to him, will go a long way to whip up a sense of national pride among the students and provide them with a better perspective on democratic governance.
He charged them to marry their books and live by all the virtues their teachers and parents are trying to instill in them, both in school and at home. “Laziness, disobedience, disrespectfulness, intolerance, and all the other social vices have no place in the Parliament; so if you want to be an MP like I am today, or do well in life, desist from all those negative behaviours”, he advised.
The school authorities who accompanied the students were pleased with the words from the Honourable Member of Parliament and assured that they would do their best to nurture the young learners into responsible, civic-minded adults.
