The National Commission for Civic Education led by its Chairperson, Ms. Kathleen Addy has called on the Editor of the Daily Graphic, Theophilus Yartey at the Head Office of the Graphic Communications Group Limited in Accra. The visit has become necessary because the Commission recognises the role of the media in deepening Ghana’s democracy. The Commission again acknowledges the impact it can have on citizens when it partners with the media in delivering Civic Education to the good people of Ghana.
NCCE Chair, Ms. Kathleen and her team were warmly welcomed to GCGL. She said the visit to the Daily Graphic is the first in a series of visits by the Commission to its stakeholders in the media industry. Ms. Addy did not mince words when she told the Editor of Graphic to support and promote Civic Education activities. Ms. Addy asked the Editor of the Daily Graphic to help NCCE engender civic consciousness among the citizens of Ghana. She was deliberate in convincing the Editor of the Daily Graphic that the NCCE has a broad constitutional mandate to fulfil and needs to partner with institutions like the Daily Graphic to realise that national obligation. Ms. Addy spoke about the operations of Civic Educators across the country and touched on the mandate of the Commission, its values, skill set and competencies. She outlined some of the thematic areas that guide Civic Education programmes and mentioned flagship programmes undertaken by the Commission.
The Editor of the Daily Graphic, Mr. Theophilus Yartey was elated to meet the NCCE Chair, her Deputies and other members of the visiting team. Mr. Yartey endorsed the words of the NCCE Chair to work together to stir up civic consciousness among citizens. He tabled some of the possible areas for collaboration and they both agreed to work in creating the much-needed civic awareness among the public. This is indeed a piece of welcoming news to the NCCE Chair, Ms. Addy.
Mr. Theophilus Yartey later took NCCE on a tour of the Daily Graphic Newsroom and explained how news is processed before reaching the target audience.
The Deputy Chairman at NCCE in charge of Operations, Mr. Samuel Asare Akuamoah and Lawyer Victor Brobbey, Deputy Chairman of Finance and Administration and other senior management members were also present at the meeting.
